Svetlana Culkova We make up about one-third of the country’s population. We love Latvia, we are proud of it, and we are part of its history and its future. We are teachers, medical workers, rescue workers, police officers, and entrepreneurs. We are citizens who speak Latvian fluently, and we want to live in peace and dignity. In recent years, laws have been adopted in Latvia that have sharply restricted the use of the Russian language. Specifically: 1. a declaration restricting the use of the Russian language in all areas of social life was introduced in the Latvian Parliament; 2. all Russian-language schools were closed; 3. amendments were adopted prohibiting children from communicating with one another and with their teachers in Russian; 4. Russian-language media outlets were shut down; 5. Russian was removed from ATMs and banking services; 6. the use of Russian was prohibited in state institutions; 7. taxes on printed publications in Russian were increased. Today, our political party leader, Alexei Roslikov of the “Stability” party, is facing trial. And not for a crime, but for his speech—for saying that the Russian language is our language. He is facing completely absurd accusations, including cooperation with Russia and incitement of interethnic hatred. We believe this is political persecution and an attempt to force people into silence. But language is not a crime. A country is its people. Love for one’s homeland is not measured by language. We, the Russians of Latvia, have the right to live in our own home and to speak our native language. Thank you to everyone who defends the rights of national minorities and is not afraid to speak the truth. Thank you. Нас около трети населения страны. Мы любим Латвию, гордимся и являемся ее частью истории и будущего. Мы учителя, медики, спасатели, полицейские, предприниматели. Мы граждане, свободно владеющие латышским языком, и мы хотим жить в мире и достоинстве. За последние годы в Латвии были приняты законы, которые резко ограничили использование русского языка. А именно: первое - в парламенте Латвии была внесена декларация об ограничении русского языка во всех социальных сферах. 2 - закрыли все русские школы. 3 - поправками запретили детям общаться между собой и с учителями на русском языке. Следующее, 4 - закрыли русские медиа. 5 - убрали русский язык из банкоматов и из банков. 6 - запретили русский язык в государственных учреждениях. 7 повысили налог на печатные издания на русском языке. Сегодня нашего лидера политической партии "Стабильность" Алексея Росликова собираются судить. И не за преступление, а за слова, за то, что он сказал, что русский язык - это наш язык. Ему предъявляют вообще абсурдные объя-- обвинения - это сотрудничество с Россией и разжигание межнациональной розни. Мы считаем, что это политическое преследование и попытки заставить людей молчать. Но язык - это не преступление. Страна - это люди. Любовь к Родине не измеряется языком. Мы, русские Латвии, имеем право жить у себя дома и говорить на свое�� родном языке.
