Oral statement of the 9th session of the Forum on Minority Issues
The Situation of Minorities in the World
Mr President,
Religious extremism, whether in Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, or any other religion, always causes acts
of barbarism. The influence of the religious theory of "just war" in American diplomacy during the 2003
invasion of Iraq, the emergence of the ISIL phenomenon in Iraq and Syria, the Buddhist
fundamentalism against the Muslim minority in Iraq and the Rohingyas in Burma, illustrate the danger
inherent in extremist religious ideas. It is the people belonging to religious minorities who are naturally
the most vulnerable to this type of extremism.
The intervention of states supporting minorities with whom they share the same religious belief usually
only fuels the fire of war in which these same minorities are forgotten.
The current situation of ethno-religious minorities in Iraq and Syria is more worrying than ever. The
genocide against the Yezidis, the Catholic and Chaldean Christians, the Shiite and Sunni Muslims, the
Kurds and the Turcomans by ISIL, requires a rapid and decisive response from the international
community.
Our Organization wishes to propose to the Forum to conduct in-depth studies on the origins of
religious fundamentalism. In order to prevent any act of violence against ethno-religious minorities, and
to prevent the emergence of another ISIL in the future, it seems necessary to us to address this
phenomenon in its various sociological, economic aspects, geopolitical and political. In order to
neutralize its ideological development.
Thank you, Mr. Chairman.
