CRIOLA
As an Afro-descendent, bisexual, and activist Brazilian woman, I would like to talk about young women
from sexual and gender minorities and their search for peace. In Brazil, the LGBT population, mostly
Afro-descendants, due to the intersectionality between race, sexual orientation, and gender identity,
has its rights threatened and/or violated. In Brazil, vulnerability mainly affects Afro-descendant
transgender women. Our country is the place where transgender people are most murdered because
of transphobia. The latest survey by the gay group of Bahia presents the frightening life expectancy of
Brazilian LGBT people, 27 years for transgender people, 20 years for lesbians and 42 years old for
bisexuals, all far below that for the average Brazilian which is 75 years. So, I would like to ask the
panellists, how can we change the situation in Brazil and promote peace for the LGBT population,
especially for those who are Afro-descendants? Thank you.
