The Special Rapporteur also takes this opportunity to note that even in those countries where there is currently a high level of tolerance for different communities of religion or belief, including the beliefs of religious minorities, there is a need to remain vigilant, and active steps should be taken to maintain high levels of tolerance. In particular, she notes that in this increasingly globalized world, an increase in intolerance in one part of the world can have an impact on the level of religious tolerance in other parts of the world. The interrelated nature of freedom of religion or belief and other human rights 75. While freedom of religion or belief forms an integral part of the entire range of human rights, the Special Rapporteur notes that the issues arising under her mandate have particularly close links to freedom of association, independence of the judiciary and freedom of expression. With regard to freedom of expression, the Special Rapporteur calls in particular upon the independent media to provide space to represent the views of religious minorities and allow them to respond to allegations made against them in the press. 76. The Special Rapporteur notes that the right to disseminate or propagate one’s religion in a peaceful fashion is an important element of freedom of religion or belief and is also supported by the right to freedom of expression.
