On February 4th 2022, Putin and Xi Jinping issued a joint statement reaffirming the importance
of UN protection of human rights and the fundamental principles on which international
cooperation should be based.
Tasked to promote an authentic multipolarity where no territory is denied the right to
development and ensure the stability outlined by the end of the Second World War.
A clear violation of these noble principles is the impeded full realization of the Free Territory of
Trieste created by Security Council Resolution 16 and Article 21 of the Paris Peace Treaty.
The FTT, by law neutral, demilitarized and endowed with an international free port, was
conceived in post-war Europe as a center of geopolitical multipolarity.
In 1953 Soviet minister of foreign Affairs Molotov rightfully claimed: “The division of the FTT Is
incompatible with the task of maintaining peace and security and is only capable of creating new
complications. ”
Nothing has changed, the full application of international law in the FTT is against the
geopolitical interest of the West for which control of this essential strategic junction remains
fundamental.
The Italian government recently illegally canceled the Commercial Memorandum with China of
2019 that included the International Free Port of Trieste, accessible by law to all states, as the
main docking point of the Belt and Road Initiative in central Europe.
After 10 years of sensabilization on the issue, we strongly reiterate, in the interests of the
BRICS+ constituent states and the citizens of the FTT, the call for an international commission
for the free port of Trieste.
