Rule 3
1.
The number and personal details of the children of a woman being admitted to
prison shall be recorded at the time of admission. The records shall include, without
prejudicing the rights of the mother, at least the names of the children, their ages
and, if not accompanying the mother, their location and custody or guardianship
status.
2.
All information relating to the children’s identity shall be kept confidential,
and the use of such information shall always comply with the requirement to take
into account the best interests of the children.

Allocation
Rule 4
Women prisoners shall be allocated, to the extent possible, to prisons close to their
home or place of social rehabilitation, taking account of their caretaking
responsibilities, as well as the individual woman’s preference and the availability of
appropriate programmes and services.

Personal hygiene

Rule 5
The accommodation of women prisoners shall have facilities and materials required
to meet women’s specific hygiene needs, including sanitary towels provided free of
charge and a regular supply of water to be made available for the personal care of
children and women, in particular women involved in cooking and those who are
pregnant, breastfeeding or menstruating.

Rule 6
The health screening of women prisoners shall include comprehensive screening to
determine primary health-care needs, and also shall determine:
(a) The presence of sexually transmitted diseases or blood-borne diseases;
and, depending on risk factors, women prisoners may also be offered testing for
HIV, with pre- and post-test counselling;
(b) Mental health-care needs, including post-traumatic stress disorder and
risk of suicide and self-harm;
(c) The reproductive health history of the woman prisoner, including current
or recent pregnancies, childbirth and any related reproductive health issues;
