A/RES/49/236 B Page 2 Guatemala and the Unidad Revolucionaria Nacional Guatemalteca contained in the second report of the Director of the Mission, regarding the implementation of their commitments under the Comprehensive Agreement on Human Rights, 3 Also taking note of the request of the parties regarding the immediate verification by the Mission of human rights aspects of the Agreement on Identity and Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the recommendation of the Secretary-General contained in his report on the Mission 4 on resources required to allow the Mission to continue to fulfil its mandate, including verification activities relating to human rights aspects of the Agreement, Stressing once again the importance of mobilizing national and international resources to strengthen the Guatemalan system for the protection of human rights, Welcoming, in that respect, the support of the donor community for the implementation of the agreements reached in the Guatemala peace process, including the Comprehensive Agreement on Human Rights, expressed in Guatemala and reiterated at the informal donors meeting on Guatemala held in Paris on 21 June 1995 under the auspices of the World Bank, Acknowledging the efforts of the Secretary-General, the Group of Friends of the Guatemala peace process 5 and the United Nations agencies and programmes concerned for their support to the Guatemala peace process, Emphasizing the importance it attaches to the full observance by the parties of human rights and the other commitments they have undertaken, Stressing the need to continue the existing momentum towards the early conclusion of an agreement on a firm and lasting peace, Having considered the recommendation of the Secretary-General regarding the extension of the mandate of the Mission, contained in his report on the Mission, 1. Stresses the significance of the Agreement on Identity and Rights of Indigenous Peoples as an important step in the Guatemala peace process and a landmark in the International Decade of the World’s Indigenous People; 6 2. Welcomes the report of the Secretary-General on the United Nations Mission for the Verification of Human Rights and of Compliance with the Commitments of the Comprehensive Agreement on Human Rights in Guatemala; 4/ 3.
