Statement by the Representative of the Russian Federation,
at the 6th Session of the Forum on Minority Issues
Agenda Item 3: “Protection of the existence and the prevention of violence against
religious minorities”
Dear Madam Chairperson.
With great attention we have familiarized
ourselves
with the draft
recommendations that have relevant practical value. It is important that we are
discussing and commenting on the current international rules concerning the
implementation and protection of human rights to freedom of conscience and freedom
of religion. Active dialogue on international forums and exchange of best solution
practices allow to determine the necessary measures to counter the growth of religious
intolerance.
Unfortunately, the situation in this area is anything but safe. The surge of
Islamophobia and anti-Semitism, which even very "successful" countries can not cope
with, is very worrying. Human rights organizations record multiple cases of
desecration of cultural centers and mosques, arson, death threats, and abuse of the
Quran.
I would also like to draw the attention to the situation of Christians in a number
of states in the Middle East and North Africa. The intolerance and bursts of violence
there are largely a consequence of the ongoing complex socio-political processes.
Today, not only the religious minorities, but also those who represent the
majority are in need of protection and enforcement of rights. In Europe, the culture of
which is based on Christian values and traditions, Christianity is forced out of the
public sphere. Moreover, according to non-governmental organizations in the
countries of Western Europe manifestations of intolerance against Christians and
desecration of Christian holy sites are recorded.
