Mission to Hungary
Summary
At the invitation of the Government, the Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms
of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance visited Hungary from
23 to 27 May 2011.
The Special Rapporteur addresses issues related to national and ethnic minorities,
including Roma; anti-Semitism; hate speech; extremist political parties, movements and
groups; migrants, refugees, asylum seekers and statelessness.
The Special Rapporteur makes several recommendations including that the
Government:
- Ensure adequate representation of ethnic and national minorities in the Hungarian
Parliament. Moreover minority self-governments should be strengthened, including through
the allocation of adequate financial, human and technical resources.
- Take all the necessary measures to reduce the high rate of Roma unemployment
and increase efforts to eliminate racial discrimination and segregation of Roma in
education.
